opportunity knocks

  1. I've been waiting for job lay-off news for weeks. The pink slip finally comes and I feel relief at finally knowing
  2. My email box keeps filling up with good wishes and kind things said about my work
  3. I glimpse new things just around the corner

Old enough

  1. I'm old enough to cut the cake while it's still hot and steaming
  2. I'm old enough to stick my fingers in the batter
  3. I'm old enough to lick the spoon and the bowl and the beaters

smooth to choppy and you're it!

  1. As I start my run, the ocean is still and as smooth as glass. Later on, it turns choppy and crashes against the sea wall. I think it was cheering me on.
  2. In and amongst the tree branches, a small brown squirrel and a woodpecker heckle each other. The squirrel chases the woodpecker up the tree. The woodpecker flits from spot to spot and then cocks its head to see where the squirrel has gone. I think the squirrel won.

Moving Day

. . . was three months ago, and I just got reconnected to the internet tonight. Somewhat freeing to be disconnected, but also somewhat disconcerting not to have the ability to google and catch up with folks via blogs and such. Today:

  1. I drive over a very large and ugly overpass and see redemption - the telephone lines above me are dotted with hundreds of birds
  2. "Carpool Rules" govern a very frank conversation about work life
  3. I reconnect with an old friend and feel a tug to return to something I have loved

patch

  1. Cold, dark rain clouds cover the horizon. Far in the distance I see a small patch of brilliant orange sky forcing a way through.

at the park

  1. From the surrounding streets a post dinner throng of kids and parents converge on the playground.
  2. The light fades and one by one the families head home. Finally only one brave pair remain. Father and son on the swings.
  3. The group of girls who have been lounging on the grass laughingly pack their bags. One folds the blanket into a neat bundle and then they're away.

patches and splashes

  1. Yesterday a patch of sunlight warmed my feet while the rest of me stayed cool in the shadows
  2. Cold rain tonight and a long wait at the bus stop. I decide to count red cars to make the time go by - 11
  3. Catching up with school friends makes me remember dreams and ambitions that have been laid quietly aside
